Comporta is located in the municipalities of Alcácer do Sal and Grândola and it is characterized by a coastline of 60 kilometers, surrounded by dunes and pine forest and dotted with rice paddies, which together constitute a unique ecosystem for its biodiversity and landscape richness.
Comporta has more than 40 natural habitats registered, with about one hundred species of animal and two dozen species of plants protected by nature conservation authorities.
Herdade da Comporta is a property of Rioforte (former Espírito Santo Group) with about 12,500 hectares of rice fields, vineyards, forests, pine forests and beaches, with some lands included in the Natura 2000 Network, a set of areas classified by the European Union for the conservation of biodiversity.
The territory of Comporta is integrated into three nature reserves, classified and protected at a national level:
- Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, a unique nesting and wintering site for more than 200 species of birds, equally important for the spawning, development and growth of several fish. In the Sado Estuary, Comporta is also part of the “Reserva Botânica das Dunas de Tróia” (Botanical Reserve of the Tróia Dunes), a nature dune ecosystem, where there are endemic species of priority character.
- National Ecological Reserve (REN), a biophysical structure that integrates areas with ecological value, sensitivity or exposed and susceptible to natural risks. It is a restriction of public utility that conditions the occupation, use and transformation of the soil to uses and actions compatible with its objectives.
- National Agricultural Reserve (RAN), defined as a set of lands that, due to their agro-climatic, geomorphological and pedological characteristics, are more apt for agricultural activity. The RAN is a territorial management instrument, which establishes constraints to the non-agricultural use of the soil, and that plays a fundamental role in the preservation of the soil resource and its affectation to agriculture.
At the moment, a public sale process of two lands in Herdade da Comporta, legally classified as Tourism Development Areas (ADT), is ongoing with projects and licenses developed by the owner – the Espírito Santo Group.
The total area of these two ADT is around 1400 hectares and the total volume of licensed construction is about 650,000 square meters.
