The Comporta region faces the real and imminent danger of being destroyed by a series of institutional acts that, although presented as a mere corollary of legal and business decisions derived from the insolvency of the Espírito Santo Group and the need to repay a debt of 120 million to Caixa Geral de Depósitos, nor do they cease to have impacts far beyond the financial sphere.
Comporta’s main problem arises from the issuance of binding urban planning opinions, issued by the public administration, favorable to the construction of buildings over 650,000 square meters. Those buildings will be spread over an area of approximately 1,000 hectares of dunes and podzols with a high interest for nature and landscape conservation.
Taking into account that the purchaser of the units will acquire all the assets of the Fund (e.g. the said part of the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve and some contiguous areas), this petition was prepared with the aim of informing the sovereign bodies about the imminent risks and, as well, suggest solutions.
